  INDOOR AIR QUALITY SCIENCE, HEALTH AND ENGINEERING 

(Course IH101)
 

The first course is a general introductory course on the various subjects involved in indoor air quality running the gamut from building design, maintenance, evaluation of problems and remediation.  It covers the range of conditions which are desirable to create in a healthful setting, a series of definitions of the most common terminology, the impact of environment on occupant comfort and health and the effects of variances from those nominal values.  It provides basics of industrial hygiene, microbiology and toxicology and describes the different categories of air pollutants which originate from both internal and external sources.  It also provides an understanding of how these different categories usually behave, migrate and change within the dynamics of occupied structures.  Included with the listing of different air pollutants, their sources and health effects, the general concepts of preventative maintenance and remediation strategies are reviewed for each type of IAQ problem.  The historical aspects of this subject and government regulations are also reviewed. 

Description:  30 hours.  Student and instructor determine the schedule.  Course manual and several extensive documents and computer programs will be provided to students, in addition to their books and handouts.  There are weekly homework assignments.  A final exam will be administered.
 
 

BASIC METHODS OF INDOOR AIR QUALITY EVALUATION

(Course IH201)
 

This is a course designed to give a student all the essential tools to conduct a complete IAQ evaluation and to recommend an appropriate set of responses to the information which is developed.  It will provide a deeper understanding than the first course of the health concepts, theory, practice, physical and chemical science, ventilation engineering, material science, technical background, designing sampling plans, hands-on practical aspects of air and surface sampling and field measurements,  testing and troubleshooting procedures and mechanical system performance evaluation, how to conduct occupant interviews and to request appropriate medical assistance and then assessing the medical findings, as well as full and final interpretation and evaluation of results when conducting an evaluation of the indoor air quality of modern buildings.  For large building populations, it provides the essentials to also perform simple epidemiological comparisons and studies.  It also covers the indoor air quality guidelines issued by both EPA and proposed by OSHA, plus the current governmental regulations and standards relating to ventilation system performance, environmental and workplace health and safety. 

It presents a semi-rigorous mathematical treatment of air behavior from the standpoint of physical chemistry, industrial hygiene and ventilation engineering.  It also includes the methods of mathematically modelling pollutant migration and exposure risk to occupants.  However, the final forms of most equations are reduced to a working level of algebra and geometry.  More detailed mathematical modelling programs and spreadsheets are provided for advanced students.  Statistical analyses and description and analytical limits of different chemical, physical, radiological, microscopic and biological sampling methods are thoroughly covered.

Computer Requirements (All Courses): 586 or Pentium 100 MB/sec processor speed, 32 MB RAM,  PC with Windows 95/98 operating systems, modem (28.8+), internet connection and email account, optimized for Netscape Communicator 4.6 or higher, multimedia.  Most aspects of the courses should be compatible with MACs but no special support or utility programs for the courses are available for MAC systems.
